Player Character Creation

Player character creation is fairly strait forward and follows these steps:

Start with the basics. Provide the character with a name and age. The character’s age will determine their base stats.

Select a class to play. There are 8 core classes in The Foregone Trail and each has it’s own unique strengths and weaknesses. The Foregone Trail does not follow the holy trinity of classes of tank/dps/healer, but classes may have a similar flavor to classic TTRPG classes.

Most combat in The Forgone Trail is ranged, and all classes have fairly good capability on that front, but may specialize in particular weapons or scenarios. Classes also build on this with specialization skills that make them shine when facing different challenges.

Available classes are:

  1. The Dandy: Dandies are smooth operators in social situations and around cities. Their combat skills are oriented around the quick draw skill and their specialization is in gaining advantage in social interactions.
  2. The Advocate: Advocates are crusaders for their cause, typically as a religious or social advocate. They are skilled at unarmed combat and in the use of shotguns for dealing massive damage. Their specialization in is motivating other characters and providing first aid. Religious variations also have skills to mitigate paranormal.
  3. The Cowpoke: Riding and roping are the core skills of this class, they aren’t too bad in a brawl or a gun fight either. The specialization comes in tricks they can do shooting or with their rope.
  4. The Guide: Guides are masters of the trail and experts in the wilderness. Their combat skill is in use of the long-range and powerful rifle and their specialization helps characters navigate the wilderness.
  5. The Mystic: Mystics are typically members of a secret society, most commonly The Rubigin Menders. They are experts in dealing with the paranormal and investigations using mystical devices and magic. They minor in combat but have specialized non-lethal skills and can handle a revolver.
  6. The Paladina: Paladinas/Paladins are religious monster hunters. Typically belonging to various orders in The Church of the Beloved Mother they dual wield heavy revolvers and have skills to enhance their combat strength and deal with cryptids or paranormal.
  7. The Tabooist: A Tabooist is steeped in the forbidden arcane arts. They pander to the paranormal, use snakes, bats and rats to their own ends and are masters of curses and enchantments. They are the only class with true offensive magic but are shunned by much of society.
  8. The Veteran: Veterans have served in a military force and have been trained in the use of weapons and the motivation of soldiers. They are experts in defense and use carbines to great effect. Their experience has hardened them to hardship and makes them tough foes under pressure.

Next level up the class to level 1 and upgrade your skills. Each level the player will gain 5 skill points to improve their character. Some skills cannot be performed untrained and will require a base skill point or level to initiate. After a skill is initiated, players can increase their skill level by expending skill points as follows:

  • 1 Skill Point: Untrained to Low
  • 2 Skill Points: Low to Mid
  • 3 Skill Points: Mid to High
  • 5 Skill Points: High to Expert
